Beyond the Serengeti: Combine Your Safari

How to combine the Serengeti with the rest of northern Tanzania and beyond — Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the beaches of Zanzibar and the summit of Kilimanjaro.

The short version
  • The Serengeti is the centrepiece of the Northern Circuit — most trips pair it with Ngorongoro Crater.
  • Tarangire and Lake Manyara add variety on the drive in from Arusha.
  • Many travellers finish on the beaches of Zanzibar, an easy flight from the park.

Building a bigger trip

Few people fly all the way to Tanzania for the Serengeti alone. The classic Northern Circuit strings it together with the Ngorongoro Crater — a self-contained caldera teeming with wildlife — and often Tarangire, famous for elephants and baobabs, and Lake Manyara's flamingos and tree-climbing lions.

For a contrast at the end, a short flight drops you on the white sand of Zanzibar to decompress; the more ambitious add a Kilimanjaro climb before or after. This hub points to the pairings that work and how to sequence them.
