The short version
  • The Serengeti holds all of the Big Five, with exceptional populations of lion, cheetah and leopard.
  • Seronera's rivers and kopjes are the best year-round bet for big cats, especially leopard.
  • Wildlife is wild — sightings are never guaranteed, and a good guide matters more than a long checklist.

What you can expect to see, and where

The Serengeti is one of the great wildlife stages on earth, but the honest framing is probabilities, not promises. Lions are widespread and often easy to find; the central Seronera valley is famous for leopards draped in riverine fig trees; cheetahs favour the open southern plains, especially during calving when prey is concentrated.

Beyond the cats, you will likely see elephant, giraffe, buffalo, hippo, and a huge supporting cast of plains game and birds. Where you go shapes what you see — this guide ties species to the sectors and seasons where your odds are best, and it never trades in 'guaranteed' sightings.
